How to Commission Diesel Generator Before Use?

Commissioning diesel generator before use

Commissioning diesel generator before use is crucial. It helps identify potential safety hazards, ensures secure wiring connections to prevent short circuits or electric leaks, and tests protective devices to promptly cut off power in case of anomalies, safeguarding both personnel and equipment. Proper commissioning also optimizes operating conditions, minimizes component wear, extends the generator’s lifespan, and ensures compliance with industry regulations and standards.

Important Notice:

Please be aware that all generators imported from us or overseas suppliers are shipped with liquids (oil, coolant, and diesel) drained out, in compliance with shipping company regulations. Therefore, before using the generator for the first time, you must refill it with the appropriate amounts of oil, coolant, and diesel.

1. No-Load Testing

Before testing under load, newly purchased diesel generators should undergo a no-load test after proper positioning, exhaust pipe installation, coolant and lubricant filling, and power cable connections.

  • Start the generator and let it idle for 1-2 minutes.
  • Ensure normal oil pressure and check for abnormal noises.
  • If the frequency fluctuates, increase the speed to 1500 RPM (rated speed).
  • Observe key indicators:
    • Frequency: 50Hz
    • Voltage: 400V, with balanced three-phase output
    • Generator indicator light ON
    • Oil pressure: No less than 2MPa
  • Ensure no leakage of oil, gas, or coolant and verify that the control switch operates smoothly.
  • Confirm that grounding and power connections are secure and correctly marked.

2. Load Testing

After a successful no-load test, proceed with load testing:

  • Gradually increase the load from low power to the generator’s rated capacity.
  • Monitor for unusual vibrations or abnormal noises—if detected, press the emergency stop button immediately.
  • Observe voltage fluctuations when increasing the load (acceptable fluctuation within 5%).
  • Ensure the frequency remains above 50Hz under full load.
  • Check exhaust color for irregularities and confirm that oil pressure and water temperature stay within specified limits.
  • Both three-phase voltage and current must remain balanced during operation.

Final Steps

Once the above commissioning steps are successfully completed without issues, the diesel generator is ready for operation. Before use, carefully read the user manual to ensure safe and correct operation of the new unit.
